Architectural Design 3
Poetic architecture has always fascinated me, thinking about the emotions that rooms may create in people. I believe that integrating users and space is at the heart of architecture. Every user should visit at least a few places that mean a lot to them. As I realised the value of having beautiful spaces, I began to wonder about sustainability. How can I create an emotional sanctuary while yet protecting the environment? How can I make the users appreciate being in that space? That was the issue I chose to address.
Poetic Journey Structure
This project was an introduction to the poetics of kampung as well as the concept of linear and concentric circulation. Each group was tasked with creating two poetic structures (linear and concentric) that represent the poetics of kampung. We were tasked with romanticising the experience of being in a Malaysian village. This work helped us understand the gist of the semester, which was to sense a space and come up with poetics to aid a structure reflect the ambiance of a kampung.
Site Analysis
The second project had us exploring Kampung Morten and analysing our assigned sites (Site A and Site B). There were several items on the Kampung that I made note of for an individual project we were assigned with as well. This was the first time our entire class had to conduct a thorough site analysis, which included extensive research on the history of our property and its surrounds. It was a memorable and entertaining event for all of us, and it was equally significant for our final project.
Discovery Center for Kampung Morten
This previous project required us to create a structure that would allow users to learn about the people, place, activities, culture, and history of Kampung Morten in Malacca. It must work as a visitor centre with interactive exhibits, similar to a museum exhibition, as well as an interaction and engagement area to assist people before to going on tours. The goal is to create a visitor centre with a tangible point of reference that preserves the culture, memories, and essence of the location. This has been the most challenging but exhilarating task I've ever undertaken.
